What did socialists use for lighting before candles?

I grew up in Europe in the 1970s and there was a furrow of humor related to socialist and communist economies of the ilk: "we pretend to work and they pretend to pay us". There used to be books of these jokes. It would be interesting to go back and read one. Post-1989 and the fall of the iron curtain, everyone is to some degree a capitalist free marketer. It is easy to forget how passionately so many of the clerisy believed they knew a better alternative.
