A gibbous moon - How many times have I heard or read the phrase? Many.
And as is often the case I understood what it was because it would have been obvious from the context. But have I ever actually read the definition? Quite possibly not.
(of the moon) having the observable illuminated part greater than a semicircle and less than a circle.
