Down Yonder Green Valley

Going through my mother's papers, I come across this handwritten note, torn from a notepad.

Down Yonder Green Valley
by Anonymous

Down yonder green valley
Where streamlets meander
Where twilight is fading,
I pensively roam.

Or at the bright noontide
In solitude I wander
Amid the dark shades
Of the lonely Ash Grove

'Tis there that the blackbirds
Are cheerfully singing
Each warbler enchants
With his note from the tree

'Tis then little think I
Of sorrow or sadness
The Ash Grove entrancing,
Spells beauty for me.

She notes

This was a song we sang at (1942/45) at Girl Scout Camp, (Camp Scott at Locust Grove, Oklahoma).  It reminded me of the woods there, and I particularly loved this peaceful son.  01/2000 VLB

Apparently, Down Yonder Green Valley is a variant (among many) of a Welsh song first published in 1802, The Ash Grove.  Camp Scott was a Girl Scout camp.
