Johnson orders pants

We have had some wonderfully colorful and quixotic presidents and any contest for top of that league would have to include Lyndon Baines Johnson. On August 9, 1964, in the midst of his reelection campaign, Johnson put in an order for some extra custom pants from Haggar Clothing Co. based in Dallas, Texas.

An animation of the White House recording of that conversation.

He was a colorful communicator. One of our most consequential presidents, particularly from a civil rights perspective, and not much more than fifty years ago and yet almost inconceivable that he could be deemed acceptable in Washington, D.C. today.
