Jeffrey Epstein is the Kilroy of our time. Equally ambiguous.

The "Jeffrey Epstein didn't kill himself" meme seems to be popping up everywhere. It is a curious phenomenon. Seemingly unplanned, uncoordinated, and to little obvious purpose. Completely open to a multitude of interpretations. Richard Fernandez points out that it is this generation's Kilroy.

History of Kilroy here.
Maybe you’ve bumped into Kilroy. He’s a bald (or balding) gentleman with a big nose, drawn peeking over a wall. Next to him is usually the phrase “Kilroy was here.” He can be found all over the world, and went viral long before social media or the Internet were around, finding his way through the theaters of war with American troops during World War II. (One of his most daring appearances may have been at the Potsdam Conference in 1945. During the summit, Harry Truman, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin had exclusive use of a VIP bathroom. One day, Stalin reportedly used the facilities, and came out demanding to know from one of his aides who Kilroy was, having found the drawing on one of the walls.)
Kilroy circulated in my school in Europe in the early seventies, receiving a boost when he showed up in the penultimate scene of Kelly's Heroes.

In checking my memory of that movie, I find the lyrics to the theme song. A song which I obviously heard but never registered. Kind of bleak, but not wrong. In fact, an important lesson that warrants reiterating.
Burning Bridges
by Mike Curb Congregation

Friends all tried to warn me
But I held my head up high
All the time they warned me
But I only passed them by
They all tried to tell me
But I guess I didn't care
I turned my back and
Left them standing there

All the burning bridges that have fallen after me
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everyone I left behind each time I closed the door
Burning bridges lost forevermore

Joey tried to help me find a job
A while ago
When I finally got it I didn't want to go
The party Mary gave for me
When I just walked away
Now there's nothing left for me to say

All the burning bridges that have fallen after me
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everyone I left behind each time I closed the door
Burning bridges lost forevermore

Years have passed and I keep thinking
What a fool I've been
I look back into the past and
Think of way back then
I know that I lost everything I thought I that could win
I guess I should have listened to my friends

All the burning bridges that have fallen after me
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everyone I left behind each time I closed the door
Burning bridges lost forevermore

Burning bridges lost forevermore
