I believe we have a significant disconnect in our political system between the citizens and the representatives who are supposed to represent them. I believe most people go along comfortable with the status quo and therefore remain off the radar screen. At the same time there are a small number of others who have a vocal interest in an outcome, whether their interest be ideological or commercial. They push for change.
Those wanting change whereas those comfortable with the status quo are not hear from. Until something is changed and everyone gets upset.
Surveying in some form is at least some part of the answer. We need some cheap, easy, quick and secure mechanism for eliciting knowledge and preferences from citizens and we really don't have that now.
