As a foreigner it’s difficult to convey to Americans how needlessly obsessed with race this country is. Other places, other countries are not like this, just FYI.

This was my sense as well. I am American but was raised abroad in many countries prior to returning in 1976 at seventeen. The obsession then was not near as bad as now and was more positively oriented towards securing civil rights but was still notable compared to other countries. It is a choice, now an ideological choice. It is not a natural or necessary condition.
