The Goat
by Unknown
There was a man. Now, please take note.
There was a man, Who had a goat.
He loved that goat. Indeed he did.
He loved that goat, just like a kid.
One day that goat felt frisk and fine,
Ate three red shirts from off the line.
The man he grabbed him by the back
And tied him to a railroad track.
But when the train hove into sight,
That goat grew pale and green with fright.
He heaved a sigh, as if in pain,
Coughed up those shirts and flagged the train.
A childhood roundalay with many versions.
That which I learned at Camp Viking in Denmark in the early seventies was Old Hogan's Goat.
Old Hogan's GoatI don't recall us being appalled by the slitting of goat throats, it was the frisson of nearly yelling Hell that was the attraction of the song.

Old Hogan's goat, Old Hogan's goat
Was a feelin' fine, Was a feelin' fine
Ate six red shirts, Ate six red shirts
Right off the line, Right off the line
At first I cursed, At first I cursed
And then I swore, And then I swore
That this old goat, That this old goat
Would a chew no more, Would a chew no more
I grabbed him by, I grabbed him by
His wooly, wooly neck, His wooly, wooly neck
And tied him to, And tied him to
A railroad track, A railroad track
A speeding train, A speeding train
Came a passing by, Came a passing by
And this goat, And this goat
Was a doomed to die, Was a doomed to die
Well, the engineer stopped, Well, the engineer stopped
Got out to see, Got out to see
What this great sight, what this great sight
On the tracks could be, On the tracks could be
And when he saw, And when he saw
It was a goat, It was a goat
He drew his knife, He drew his knife
And slit its throat, And slit its throat
When the goat got to heaven, When the goat got to heaven
St. Peter said, St. Peter said
Tell me poor goat, Tell me poor goat
Where is your head, Where is your head
And the goat replied, And the goat replied
I cannot tell, I cannot tell
It must have gone, It must have gone
Way down to . . . .
Yi Yi Yi YI Yi Yi Yi Yi - Poor Goat!
