No hierarchy of priorities, then no trade-offs. No trade-offs, then no negotiating. No negotiating, then no engagement. No engagement fosters tribalistic Manichaeism.

An alternative way of putting it is that normal people have a hierarchy of priorities which also establishes the need for trade-offs. Maybe sacrificing your top priority is worthwhile if you get three of your second priority. That sort of thing.

If everything is an equal priority (those most engaged), there is no latitude for trade-offs or negotiating. It is all or nothing. Hence, polarization.

No hierarchy of priorities, then no trade-offs. No trade-offs, then no negotiating. No negotiating, then no engagement. No engagement fosters tribalistic Manichaeism.

UPDATE: There seems to be some issue with Matt Yglesias's twitter account. Can't tell if the tweet has been deleted or some other issue. Here is the data he was reverencing.
