A relatively nice piece in the New York Times on Ernie Pyle, famous man-of-the-people front line reporter in World War II. In college in the late seventies, Ernie Pyle's books with his World War II accounts were staples in used bookstores and I think I have them all though I haven't read them in decades.
From The Man Who Told America the Truth About D-Day by David Chrisinger. Very good photographic illustrations as well. Pyle brought the realities of war to the American living room in an accessible and trusted vernacular. His was also the modern restatement of Sherman's affirmation that "War is Hell". No matter how just the cause, how necessary it might be, no matter how shining the heroism of individuals, it is inescapably a searing tragedy.
