The Abbey in the Oakwood, 1809/10 by Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840)

I first came across this in Fantastic Art, edited by David Larkin circa 1980. There was a used bookstore on M Street, probably between 33rd and 34th Streets where I acquired a number of large format art books for a dollar a piece. One of the early locations that contributed so many choices to my early collection of books, now in the thousands. These cheap but beautiful art books provided a foundation of art knowledge never acquired in the classroom.
