The other day I am driving between meetings and am listening to NPR. It is after the Putin/Biden summit and there is a press conference with Biden. Apparently Putin made some allusion to the need for state security to prevent problems like the January 6th riot on Capitol Hill. Biden was addressing that in his press conference and made the following statement:
It’s one thing for literally criminals to break through, cordon, go into the capitol, and kill a police officer and be held unaccountable than it is for people objecting and marching on the Capitol and saying, ‘You are not allowing me to speak freely'
That was an arresting description contra the evidence. I was certain someone would raise the issue in a follow-up question but no one did and I arrived at my destination.
I kept an eye open for the mainstream media commentary over the past couple of days but saw nothing. I have seen perhaps 2-3 right leaning news organizations mentioning the false claim.
There is still so much we do not know about the January 6th 2021 riots at Capitol Hill. We know that much of the original reporting was at the least confused and misleading. In the days immediately afterwards there were claims that some of the violence was led by black bloc Antifa anarchists but that claim drifted away. It was also claimed that 5-6 people were killed on Capitol Hill, including at least 2-3 Police officers.
It has since emerged that there was only a single fatality from the riots - a retired Air Force officer shot and killed by the Capitol Police. For months the mainstream media has claimed that Capitol Police officers Brian Sicknick was beaten to death with a fire distinguisher. Information was unforthcoming for months from the Capitol Police or the Washington, D.C. police about cause of death. Sicknick was held up as one of the primary pillars for the charge that this was a violent insurrection and the second impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.
His family repeatedly claimed he had not been beaten to death and in May or so, the medical examiners report was finally released, indicating he had died from natural causes, two strokes the day after the riots. He had not been injured by a fire extinguisher.
Much remains unknown. I am aware that perhaps 25 - 30 people have been charged with property theft and property damage. I think there have been some 500 hundred arrests and that those arrests still continue. It appears that some of those in the Capitol building were admitted by Capitol police. Tapes from the interior of the Capitol just released last week show a breach of a barricaded door by a dozen or more black bloc individuals. Whether they were Antifa does not yet seem to be known but the video lends credence to the protestor claims at the time and which been steadily denounced since then.
We'll know more in a year or two and much of what we think we know now will likely be overturned, both for those saying it was a violent insurrection and for those claiming it was a mere citizen protest.
But for the president of the United States to make the claim at a foreign press conference that a Capitol police officer was murdered in the Capitol by violent insurrectionists when that claim has been deeply researched and completely repudiated by the family and the medical examiner? That it is kind of startling! And while we don't expect the mainstream media to be anything but a cheerleading section, it is still surprising to see them meekly accept an assertion known to be untrue.
There will always be disagreements on the interpretation of facts but it doesn't seem unreasonable to accept facts which have been deeply researched and resolved over many months. I have not come across any reports disputing the findings of the medical examiners report. So why introduce this false claim?
Deeply puzzling and potentially troubling.
