Roman stylus pens had a pointed end to scratch messages into the wax surface of wooden writing tablets. The flat end was for smoothing wax for reuse. Here’s a stylus alongside a tablet with Roman London’s oldest commercial record, dated 8th January AD 57. pic.twitter.com/TVvFTzWY5i
