Silphium was a plant native to ancient Cyrenaica; it was one of the most highly-sought items in the ancient Greek World. Its fame as both a culinary spice and a medicine became widespread, leading the Cyreneans to depict the luxury item on their coinage.

Critical as it was, silphium is unidentified and now believed extinct. We do no what plant it was and we do not know the circumstances of its extinction.
