Reprising baskets of deplorables just for old time memories and laughs

What's old is new again.  In 2016, we had the basket of deplorables as a campaign slogan.  Specifically from a Hilary Clinton speech:

You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. (Laughter/applause) Right? (Laughter/applause) They're racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic – you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that.

This condescension bordering on pathological hatred of half the population proved such a winning strategy, that two Democratic academics have chosen to reprise it in 2024.  White Rural Rage by Paul Waldman and Tom Schaller.  Kind of remarkable that they are so willing to trumpet their ignorant bigotry and racism so loudly.  But to each their own.  A free society means people are free to make a jackass of themselves.

As part of the publicity campaign, they created a hashtag based on the title of their book #WhiteRuralRage to bring attention to their opus of hate.  Well . . . It did get attention.

More specifically, it got hijacked by all those deplorables so filled with hatred that they just wanted to have some humorous fun at the expense of cognitively constipated pundits.

According to the responses so far to #WhiteRuralRage, White Rural Rage entails

Beautiful women

Music and song

Grilled meats

Growing things

Funny animals and pets

Beautiful dawns and dusks

Baking

and Love of the good life

If that's White Rural Rage, I suspect they are doing it wrong.  If that is mild humor as a rebuke to the small minded and empty hearted - well, that's pretty good.
