Many things described as "liberal" today mean the opposite of what was historically true and what many people expect, and this disconnect is likely contributing to some of heightened frustration we're seeing in political arguments in 2020.

Too libertarian and open to be considered establishment Republican and too anti-racist, too equality-for-all, and too empirical/scientific method to be considered Democrat, I have sought a useful description to hang my philosophical hat on. A good while ago I settled on Classical Liberal. They are fleeing the Democratic party and there isn't much room there. However, the term is useful in terms of a description.
