You see what is shown

A very striking example of one reason for the unreliability of eye-witness testimony when it comes to facial descriptions. We are exquisitely attuned to the human face and can usually pick up gender from the smallest fraction of a glance and age with just a little bit more.

This video illustrates a phenomenon about which I was less aware, the extent to which angle and movement of light affects visual perception of the face.

The young woman seems to add or subtract 10 years, adds or subtracts 10-15% in weight and ranges from plain to beautiful. All because of the angle and/or movement of the light source.
