The Props assist the House by Emily Dickinson

The Props assist the House
by Emily Dickinson

The Props assist the House
Until the House is built
And then the Props withdraw
And adequate, erect,
The House supports itself
And cease to recollect
The Auger and the Carpenter-
Just such a retrospect
Hath the perfected Life-
A past of Plank and Nail
And slowness - then the Scaffolds drop
Affirming it a Soul.
Love the imagery. It aligns with my concern that the modern proclivity in radical circles to dispense with Enlightenment Age values and democratic norms enact the same sequence - the house forgets what was necessary for its building.
