Before Greeks and Romans, Phoenicians ruled Mediterranean. Core of Phoenician territory was city-state of Tyre, in what-is-now Lebanon. Phoenician civilization lasted from 1550-300 BC, when Persians and later Greeks, conquered Tyre.
