16 HANS MEMLING, Flemish, act. ca. 1465-d. 1494
Portrait of a Young Man
Oil on panel; 151/4 X 11 1/8 in. (38.8 X 28.3 cm.)

Memling excelled in portraiture, continuing the tradition of Jan van Eyck and Petrus Chistrus. This picture, which dates from 1470-75, is one of his finest male portraits. The identity of the sitter is not known, but his features and dress suggest that he may have been a member of the large Italian colony in BRuges. (See also European Paintings, no. 60.)
