The indispensability of Christianity to the Age of Enlightenment/Classical Liberal model

From How Intellectuals Found God by Peter Savodnik.  The subheading is Almost 150 years after Nietzsche said ‘God is dead,’ some of our most important thinkers are getting religion. Peter Savodnik meets the new theists.

Over the past decade, I have become increasingly convinced that practicing Christianity is inseparable from the successful working of the Age of Enlightenment/Classical Liberal world model built in the West.  That was certainly the view of many of the founding fathers who tended towards deism rather than a specific branch of Christianity.

It is almost indisputable that religious observance and church attendance are constructively beneficial for individuals and families.  But beyond that utilitarian perspective, there is mounting evidence, it seems to me, that for the Age of Enlightenment/Classical Liberal model to work, people need to share some of the founding precepts of Christianity.  Just which ones are the most critical I do not know but I suspect that they include something along the lines of:

Respect for rule of law and responsibility for actions (Old Testament)

Love, mercy, forgiveness and redemption (New Testament)

Tolerance and Openness through universal humanism (we are all God's Children)

Whether there is indeed a movement back towards Christianity among intellectuals, I do not know.  But I am increasing confident that there needs to be such a return by everyone.

Generics are 90% of the US drug market and are priced at 67% of other OECD countries

The US has high prices for branded drugs but it has some of the lowest prices for generic drugs in the world and generic drugs are 90% of prescriptions. I’ve been saying this for years but here is the latest study:

U.S. prices for brand-name originator drugs were 422 percent of prices in comparison countries, while U.S. unbranded generics, which we found account for 90 percent of U.S. prescription volume, were on average cheaper at 67 percent of prices in comparison countries, where on average only 41 percent of prescription volume is for unbranded generics. U.S. prices for brand-name drugs remained 308 percent of prices in other countries even after adjustments to account for rebates paid by drug companies to U.S. payers and their pharmacy benefit managers.

Fens in Finland

My daughter was over yesterday and she gave me a straight line which I am still chuckling over.

She had seen some pictures of very cheap homes in Finland, a country which I have visited.  I mentioned to her the importance of location.

Me:  Make sure it is on the southern coast.  Most of Finland inland is marsh and pine forest and they are famous for their mosquitoes.

Daughter:  And there are lots of fens as well.

Me:  Of course there are a lot of Finns.  Its Finland.

You can wait a whole lifetime for that sort of setup.

This, both the year's, and the day's, deep midnight is.

Growing up in Sweden, as an expatriate kid, we celebrated Santa Lucia Day on December 13th.  A beautiful and heartening celebration of light and life in the midst of the cold and darkness of winter.

John Donne had a poem to Saint Lucy as well.

A Nocturnal upon St. Lucy's Day
By John Donne

'Tis the year's midnight, and it is the day's,
Lucy's, who scarce seven hours herself unmasks;
         The sun is spent, and now his flasks
         Send forth light squibs, no constant rays;
                The world's whole sap is sunk;
The general balm th' hydroptic earth hath drunk,
Whither, as to the bed's feet, life is shrunk,
Dead and interr'd; yet all these seem to laugh,
Compar'd with me, who am their epitaph.

Study me then, you who shall lovers be
At the next world, that is, at the next spring;
         For I am every dead thing,
         In whom Love wrought new alchemy.
                For his art did express
A quintessence even from nothingness,
From dull privations, and lean emptiness;
He ruin'd me, and I am re-begot
Of absence, darkness, death: things which are not.

All others, from all things, draw all that's good,
Life, soul, form, spirit, whence they being have;
         I, by Love's limbec, am the grave
         Of all that's nothing. Oft a flood
                Have we two wept, and so
Drown'd the whole world, us two; oft did we grow
To be two chaoses, when we did show
Care to aught else; and often absences
Withdrew our souls, and made us carcasses.

But I am by her death (which word wrongs her)
Of the first nothing the elixir grown;
         Were I a man, that I were one
         I needs must know; I should prefer,
                If I were any beast,
Some ends, some means; yea plants, yea stones detest,
And love; all, all some properties invest;
If I an ordinary nothing were,
As shadow, a light and body must be here.

But I am none; nor will my sun renew.
You lovers, for whose sake the lesser sun
         At this time to the Goat is run
         To fetch new lust, and give it you,
                Enjoy your summer all;
Since she enjoys her long night's festival,
Let me prepare towards her, and let me call
This hour her vigil, and her eve, since this
Both the year's, and the day's deep midnight is.
