What we've got here . . . is a failure to communicate.
From National Conservatism has no coherent, workable plan for America by Noah Smith. The subheading is Unlike the Reaganites of the 80s, today's insurgents have more rage than vision. For those of us who lived through the Reagan presidency, rather than just reading about it in history books, I'd argue that there was a fair amount of at least ire way back then. Almost existential aggravation. And in some circles, rage.
Similarly, today, amongst many conservatives there isn't so much rage as perplexity. "Why are these people destroying the very instruments of prosperity and governance which have made life so bountiful?"
But seeing the headline sparked the idea that what we have here is a failure to communicate. Classical Liberals and many brands of conservative don't want a plan because they don't need a plan. They have confidence in a classical liberal model of constitutional republican representative democracy structured to guard natural rights such as property rights, equality before the law, rule of law, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of association, freedom of movement, etc., etc.
Classical Liberals believe in these underlying principles and know that through self-organization and emergent order, optimal outcomes are achieved. They see and they believe. They are conservative in the respect of trying to conserve the radical and progressive model of Classical Liberalism which works.
At its heart, Classical Liberals know that what Adam Ferguson observed is true. When adhering to these bedrock principles,
Nations stumble upon establishments, which are indeed the result of human action, but not the execution of any human design
No five year plan required. Classical Liberals/conservatives have a belief in a structure of governance and economy which now has a greater than two hundred track record of success. During its era, all citizens of the Classical Liberal model have become healthier, longer lived, more prosperous (astonishingly so), more technologically enabled, dramatically more knowledgeable, more peaceful, less violent, etc. We know the Age of Enlightenment Classical Liberal model works. We have faith in its morality and in its efficacy. No other system comes close.
The alternative is the authoritarian/totalitarian structure which has been the norm for all of recorded history. The structure of capricious central planning, and five year plans, and remote decision making. Which always leads to poverty and starvation.
Conservatism, AKA, Classical Liberal is the demonstrably revolutionary and progressive model. And a model which works. We want to preserve it. Or conserve it. We do not want to return to the authoritarian model of five year plans determined by remote experts.
For anyone locked into a traditional authoritarian mindset, it is difficult to conceive of the Classical Liberal alternative. For such individuals, the demonstration of seriousness is indeed embodied in that product of authoritarian central planning. The plan is everything and the worst you can say is that they have no plan.
For Classical Liberals, there is no need for a plan. All the elements are already in place, we need merely to protect them. In terms of solving whatever are perceived by citizens as critical issues, always the answer is going to be the demonstrated miracle of self-organization and emergent order arising from property rights, equality before the law, rule of law, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of association, freedom of movement, etc.
Classical Liberals have belief in a demonstrated reality.
Authoritarians need their five year plans.
There is a yawning chasm of miscomprehension between the two.
