Well, everywhere I went was where I didn't want to be.

So impressive.  

Dick Cavett as a knowledgeable and civilized interviewer is one thing.

But Paul Simon?  What a genius.  I have encountered people like this before whose absorption of everything to do with their topic of interest is complete.  They know vast amounts, they repurpose across vast topics, and they are always fitting together pieces of a puzzle.

In this instance, Bridge Over Troubled Waters incorporating elements of Bach, Skat, and Gospel.  

Matt Ridley talks about ideas having sex and this story is a vivid image of that.

Plus: 

Cavett: 'Why were you stuck?'

Simon  'Well, everywhere I went was where I didn't want to be.'
