Song of the Gap
by Jess Gagnon
[Chorus 1]
Your great-great-grandfather he cleared the land
Your great-grandfather he plowed the land
Your grandfather he made the land profitable
Your father he sold it all, To become a civil servant
[Verse 1]
And then you kid, you don't know what it is you're going to do
In your one room apartment
Its way too expensive, freezing in winter
You daydream about becoming a land-owner
And you dream at night of having your little piece land
[Chorus 2]
Your great-great-grandmother, she had 14 children
Your great-grandmother had almost as many
Your grandmother had three and that was enough
Your mother didn't want any, you were an accident
[Verse 2]
But you sweetie, you change partners all the time
When you make a mistake, you solve it with an abortion
But there are mornings you wake up crying
When you dreamed during the night of a big table surrounded by children.
[Chorus 3]
Your great-great-grandfather lived through the Great Depression
Your great-grandfather was picking up pennies
And your grandfather, . . . A miracle! He became a millionaire
Your father inherited it and put it all in savings
[Verse 3]
But you youngster, the government owns your ass.
There's no way to get a loan from the bank
To calm your desire to hold-up the cashier
You read books that speak of voluntary simplicity
[Chorus 4 ]
Your great-great-grandparents way back then, they knew how to celebrate
your great-grandparents, they were swinging hard in the evenings
Your grandparents really boogied
For your parents, it was discos, that's where they met each other
[Verse 4]
And you, my friend, what do you do with your evenings?
So turn off your TV, don't stay at home
Happily, some things never change
Put on your best clothes 'cause we're going dancing tonight ..
