If there was ever a monarch designed by an ill-natured Deity to lose his crown, it was James II. He was stodgy, stubborn and stupid; even has brother thought that James's mistresses were so ugly and stultifying but they must have been assigned "by his priest for penance." But his throne in 1685 was as stable as it had been when in 1603 the first James crossed the border to enjoy his inheritance. The second James, however, achieved the near impossible. Within 36 months, he had so antagonized everybody who counted that Parliament invited a foreigner, a Dutchman, to replace him and engineered what history calls the Glorious Revolution.
