An examination of American Community Survey (ACS) data in the major metropolitan areas of the United States shows that suburbs and exurbs have the shortest one-way work trip travel times for the largest number of people.I think most people immediately connect living in the suburbs with very lengthy commutes in to the city. While that impression is correct, it ignores that many people in the suburbs work in the suburbs and many people in the urban core also work in the suburbs. The article goes in to some depth exploring the various permutations and nuances, but the net is that in addition to all their many other attractions, the suburbs represent a material time saving in commuting time.
